Economy Caramels

A great treat

Prep time 45 minutes

Things You Need

  • Saucepan
  • Suitable stiring tool
  • Rimmed cookie sheet or pan
Butter Mints

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 can evaporated milk
  • 1 cup Karo light syrup
  • 1 stick butter (or margarine)
  • 1/2 t salt
  • 1 1/2 t vanilla

Directions

  1. Combine sugar, Karo, salt and 1/3 can milk in heavy saucepan
  2. On medium heat, stirring frequently, heat to 234°
  3. Gradually stir in another 1/3 can of milk
  4. Cook to 234° and add final 1/3 can milk and sliced butter
  5. Cook to 244° (firm ball)
  6. Remove from heat and add vanilla
  7. Pour into oiled pan but do not scrape saucepan
  8. Cool and cut

Optional

Nuts, coconut, or fruit may be added before pouring.
