Rice Krispie® Treats

This recipe group is listed in Dessert: Other

Here are a few variations on a classic treat. I find it interesting that the version from Kellogs® uses more cereal and the version from Jet-Puffs uses more marshmallows.

Rice Krispie Treats

Ingredients

  • 3 T butter or margarine
  • 1 package (10 oz., about 40) marshmallows or 4 cups miniature marshmallows (fresher makes softer treats, never use really old marshmallows)
  • 6 cups Rice Krispies® or similar "Crisp Rice" cereal

Directions

  1. Coat 13 x 9 pan with cooking spray or butter
  2. In large saucepan or pot, melt butter over low heat
  3. Add marshmallows and stir until completely melted
  4. Remove from heat and add cereal
  5. Stir quickly until well coated
  6. Using a buttered spatula or spoon back, spread mixture into coated 13 x 9 pan
  7. Let cool
  8. Cut into 2 inch squares

Optional

My very old version included 1 t vanilla stirred in just before the cereal.

Press firmly into coated cake or geletin mold to get different shapes. Or press into foil cupcake cups.

Find and use holiday colored crisp rice cereal or combine normal with chocolate crisp rice cereal. You can stir in food coloring just before adding the cereal for more fun colors.

Use Peeps as the marshmallows and the whole batch will take on new colors. Split the batch to use multiple colors of peeps and layer them for a segregated but colorful treat.

Mix in coconut, M&M®s, chocolate chips or bits, raisins, or most any delicious item. Test this though before you make a batch to gift away to be sure it is a good flavor and blend.

Add 1/2 cup or more peanut butter as you melt the butter.
